Know yourself: Questionnaires to assess your mental well-being. These self-assessment questionnaires have been developed by organizations and institutes specializing in mental disorders. They are quick, easy to understand and designed to provide a general idea of your level of mental health. If you think you may have a mental disorder, the next step is a more in-depth evaluation by a professional.
Depression is extreme sadness or despair that lasts more than a few days. It interferes with daily life activities and can cause physical symptoms such as pain, weight loss or gain, sleep pattern disturbances or lack of energy. Things that used to be pleasurable may no longer be so.
People with depression may also experience inability to concentrate, feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt, and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide. Approximately 1 in 10 people suffer from depression at some point in their lives, and women are more likely to experience it than men.

Anxiety is an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worrying thoughts and physical changes like increased blood pressure. People with anxiety disorders usually have recurring intrusive thoughts or concerns. They may avoid certain situations out of worry, such as eye contact with others or leaving their home. They may also experience physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, dizziness, rapid heartbeat or panic attacks.
Anxiety is not the same as fear; it is considered a future-oriented and long-lasting response focused on a perceived threat, whereas fear is focused on a specific present threat. Anxiety is the fear of "what could happen." It can be generalized (a general state of worry and unease) or specific (phobias, social anxiety).

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can appear in some people following extremely traumatic events such as combat, a terrorist attack, a crime, accident or natural disaster.
People with PTSD may relive the trauma through painful memories, flashbacks or recurring dreams or nightmares. They may avoid activities or places that remind them of the traumatic incident. People with PTSD may have symptoms such as an exaggerated startle response, sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating or remembering, and feelings of guilt for having survived the trauma when others did not.

Manic periods may be characterized by excess energy, positive mood, rapid speech, reckless or impulsive behavior, overconfidence and racing thoughts. Depressive symptoms may include low energy, low self-esteem, prolonged sadness, suicidal thoughts, changes in eating or sleeping habits and lack of motivation or joy.
